自分以外 / Without Me
This series is developed from his other works, “Speech Balloons”, “Speech Balloon Man”. The lines and silhouette are sampled from one of the most famous Manga artists in Japan, Osamu Tezuka. What may seem like other abstract art, however, upon a closer review, are shapes of characters emerging from the early days of Osamu Tezuka’s comic work. Tezuka often drew “Mob scenes”, which small role characters depicted throughout his various comic books were gathered into one drawing for a salute to the supporting cast.
Nakamura placed the character’s silhouettes throughout the entire page in their various mannerisms and pose. Tezuka often drew these irrelevant characters behind the main characters so Nakamura used these and made them as his designs. This series called ”Without Me”, a homage to Tezuka and the regular person, going about their daily routine. Nakamura displayed this series to Osamu Tezuka and Shotaro Ishinomori Exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo-2013.
Nakamura commented on his inspiration from Tezuka and lamented of the time of war Tezuka had to endure.
“This series “Without Me” is inspired by Tezuka’s 1960’s works. I’ve taken parts of his sub characters and reconstructed them. The lines Tezuka drew are sophisticated yet abstract. We are able to see his work, which was influenced by Disney animation. One of the most famous Japanese Manga artist while conscious of manga line work, his own safety once in jeopardy by his inspiration (the West) during the bombing by the USA.” -Kengo Nakamura.
